USM Alumna to Study in Lithuania on Fulbright Scholarship

June 14 , 2007

Michelle K. Alger of Portland recently received a Fulbright Scholarship to research the non-violent independence movement in Lithuania.  The scholarship will allow Alger to remain in Lithuania for nine months, provides a living stipend and covers costs of travel, books, and classes.  Alger will study at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.

After graduating from USM in May of 2006 with a bachelor's in geography-anthropology, Alger received a Baltic Studies Fellowship and a Lithuanian BAFSA Fellowship, which allowed her to learn Lithuanian at Indiana University. Her Fulbright research will lead to an article to be published and presented in both Lithuania and the U.S.

While at USM, Alger served on the Student Senate, and was the student representative to the Honors College Planning Commission and the Honors Faculty Council.  She also was a member of the Honors Student Organization and the Geography-Anthropology Student Organization.

A 2001 graduate of Thornton Academy, Alger is the daughter of Donna Alger of North Waterboro and Joseph Alger Sr. of Gorham.
