News ReleasesWomen's History Month at USM February 27, 2007 USM's Women's Studies Program is celebrating Women's History Month with a look at the 1972 Title IX law enacted to provide gender equity in high school and college athletic programs, and other areas of concern for gender equity in today's society. Historian Susan Ware, author of numerous books including "Title IX: A Brief History with Documents," is the month's keynote speaker. Her free lecture, "A Sporting Chance: Title IX and Women's History" will take place 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, in the University Events Room of USM's Glickman Family Library in Portland. The annual Women's History Month Dinner will take place from 5-7 p.m. on March 7, in USM's Abromson Community Education Center, Portland. While Ware's lecture is free and open to the public, dinner tickets are $15 public/$9 students and must be purchased in advance by calling 780-4862. Saturday, March 10, representatives from USM's History Department will lead a guided tour of the Portland Women's History Trail City Hall Loop departing 10 a.m. from Monument Square. The tour will take place rain or shine and participants should wear comfortable shoes. For more information about the tour, please call 780-4284. Author, playwright, and performance artist Kate Bornstein, author of "Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws" will lead a community discussion/workshop on teen suicide prevention from 5:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, in the University Events Room, Glickman Family Library, Portland. She also will perform "Damned Dreams and Dangerous Desires: The Personal Politics of Sex and Gender" from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, in USM's Talbot Lecture Hall, Luther Bonney Hall, Portland. The performance, which examines transgender issues, is free and open to the public. Bates College Professor of Art and Visual Culture Erica Rand will talk about her own participation in recreational figure skating, including a recent trip to the Gay Games in her free lecture, "Red Nails, Black Skates, Gay Games: Gender at the Ice Rink and the Politics of Pleasure." Rand's lecture will take place from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 21 in the University Events Room of the Glickman Family Library, Portland. |
