News ReleasesUSM Honors Four with Emeriti Status May 7, 2007 Three University of Southern Maine professors and one administrator will receive emeriti status for exemplary scholarship, public service and service to the university. The announcement will be made at USM’s 127th Commencement, scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday, May 12, at the Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland. Charles M. Lyons of Scarborough, professor emeritus of special education, will receive emeritus status in recognition of 33 years of service to USM's College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) and the University of Maine System. He served as associate dean of USM’s CEHD, interim president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, president of the University of Maine at Fort Kent, the University of Maine at Augusta, and vice chancellor of the University of Maine System. Now president of York County Community College, he is the only person who was president of two University of Maine System colleges and the only person to be president of both University of Maine System and Maine Community College institutions. Samuel G. Andrews of Cumberland, who retired from USM this February after 41 years of service, will be named chief financial officer emeritus. He came to USM in 1966 as an instructor of business administration, rising to the level of associate professor in 1972. He held various administrative posts until being named vice president for administration in 1987. Richard G. Stebbins of Yarmouth, professor emeritus of chemistry, is retiring after 24 years of service. He joined the chemistry faculty in 1983 and became department chair in 1987, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1988, then dean of the college from 1992-1997. Marijane Fall of Gorham, professor emerita of human resource development in the College of Education and Human development, has served USM since 1995, and was the coordinator of COHD’s counseling program. A former elementary school counselor, she focused her teaching and research on counseling children in schools, play therapy and counseling adults. |
