Maine Teachers Receive Technology Training in USM Lab
USM Associate Professor of Technology John Marshall has used
his lab to introduce hundreds of USM technology students to
the theory and application of industrial hydraulics and pneumatics.
Last week, July 16-18, his “students” were technology teachers from Maine high schools and middle schools who, under Marshall’s guidance, were in the lab designing pneumatic instructional boards and modules. The teachers, in turn, will take this knowledge back to high schools and middle schools where they will introduce their students to the principles of fluid power (pneumatics), and automation control.
It’s part of an ongoing program to expose more Maine students to pre-engineering career paths.
USM’s School of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology (ASET), Fairchild
Semiconductor, Nichols Portland, and National Semiconductor
are funding the project.
For years, USM has trained all the technology teachers for Maine’s high schools and middle schools. But despite rapid advancements in technology, these teachers have not had the benefit of consistent, in-depth professional development programs close to home.
John Wright, dean of ASET, proposed the program as a way to promote the technological literacy of Maine students, a goal of Maine’s Learning Results. ASET is the USM school that offers the state’s only program to train technology educators.
