Survivor of Shooting To Speak on Aftermath of Trauma

Veteran state police officer Bobby Smith, who was shot and seriously wounded during a routine traffic stop, will give a presentation on "Police Survival: Dealing With the Aftermath of Trauma," from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, Thursday, May 30, at the Double Tree Hotel, Portland.

The presentation, which is sponsored by the University of Southern Maine Police Department, is open to public safety personnel, counselors and other interested members of the public. Registration is required. The fee, including breakfast, is $20. For more information, please contact James Daniels of USM at 780-4501 or USM Sgt. Insowa Jones at 780-4561.

Smith, an 11-year veteran of the Louisiana State Police, knows firsthand how trauma can change a person's life. In March of 1986, Smith was shot in the face during a routine traffic stop, resulting in the loss of his sight, career and marriage.

Smith went on to earn a Ph.D. in psychology/counseling and today does motivational speaking on how to deal with the aftermath of violence and trauma. He is author of the book "Visions of Courage: The Bobby Smith Story."
