USM’s Summer Session Breaks All Records
During a year of economic downturns, State budget deficits,
and international upheaval, the University of Southern Maine
is experiencing a record Summer Session enrollment.
As of June 21, the end of week 11 in Summer Session’s registration
cycle, 5,188 students have registered to take summer classes—an
increase of 14 percent over last year. The number of credit
hours—a key indicator of growth since it is a measure of classes
taken and tuition generated—is 20 percent higher than the
same time last year. There are eight more weeks of Summer
Session left. This continues a growth trend for USM’s Summer
Session that began five years ago.
Last summer, USM registered a total of 4,802 summer students, who accounted for roughly 40 percent of the seven campus University of Maine System summer enrollment. System figures for this summer have not yet been released.
John LaBrie, director of Summer Session, attributes the record enrollment partly to new programs, such as a master’s in social work and an accelerated bachelor’s of science in nursing. LaBrie also cites a streamlined financial aid system that electronically processes financial aid applications in 10 days.
LaBrie said, “USM’s responsiveness to community needs and expectations in developing new programs and providing excellent customer service is the key to our success this summer.”
