Proposed Smoking Policy Debated
During this academic year a task force at USM has been exploring the possibility of extending the current university policy regulating smoking on campus. The proposal would ban smoking on any campus location, inside or out. The task force, led by Pamela Clay-Storm of Student Health Services, is seeking ways to reduce risks related to smoking and second-hand smoke.
To include more campus members in the discussion of the proposed extended ban, the university is hosting a forum on each campus. The proposal already has been discussed by the Senates.
A forum will be held on the Portland campus on Tuesday, April 9 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater; the forum will be held on Wednesday, April 10 from 11:30 am to 1 pm in the Multifunction Room 170 at Lewiston-Auburn College; and a forum will be held on the Gorham Campus Thursday, April 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room in the Brooks Student Center.
President Richard L. Pattenaude will make a decision about whether or not to adopt the proposed ban by the end of the spring semester. It has been decided already that smoking will be eliminated from all student residence halls.
