USM Hosts NASA/NSF Project

This is the third year that USM is offering the ACCESSEarth Summer Institute, a project funded by the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in which participants-high school students with recognized disabilities from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont and science teachers-develop better methods for teaching science to high school students with disabilities, and better ways to adapt traditional field trips so special needs students can participate.

This week's schedule includes lab work in Bailey Hall on USM's Gorham campus and field trips to take soil samples and study local birds and vegetation.

Tuesday July 23:
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Wells Estuary Project
1-4 p.m. - lab work in Bailey Hall

Wednesday July 24
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Wells Estuary Project
1-4 p.m. - lab work in Bailey Hall

Thursday July 25
2:30-5 p.m. - Scarborough Marsh

To arrange coverage at one of the field trips or lab sessions, contact Nancy Lightbody, director of the institute, at 776-0081 (cell phone), or 228-8115 (office).
