USM Professor Scearce Selected to Set Toni Morrison Poem to Music

USM Assistant Professor of Music J. Mark Scearce has been selected to set a Toni Morrison poem to music. In November 2001, Vanity Fair published an issue commemorating 9/11, including a poem by Morrison. Professor Scearce contacted Morrison to explore the possibility of setting the poem to music, submitted choral and orchestral pieces, and was selected for the job. The piece, to be titled "The Dead of September 11," will premiere a year from now in Nashville. The Nashville Chamber Orchestra invited Professor Scearce to serve as its composer-in-residence. You can visit Professor Scearce's Web site at www.usm.maine.edu/music/faculty/scearcej.htm.
