Report Card Available on K-12 Public Education

As students, parents and teachers prepare for the opening of the 2002-2003 academic year, the University of Southern Maine has made available a report on the condition of Maine public schools.

The sixth annual report, "The Condition of K-12 Public Education in Maine 2002," was researched and published by the Maine Education Policy Research Institute, a nonpartisan organization funded by the Maine State Legislature, the University of Southern Maine, and the University of Maine. David Silvernail, director of USM's Center for Educational Policy, Applied Research and Evaluation, is the lead author.

The 2002 report indicates there has been a slight decline in the number of students enrolled and that there are 285 school administrative units in Maine, with a total of 715 public schools.

Maine students continue to be among the top performers on national standardized assessments. In 1996, Maine's 4th graders ranked among the top six states in science while Maine's 8th graders scored above the national averages.

Results of the new MEA tests, which measure achievement of Maine's Learning Results, showed a significant majority of students partially meeting, meeting or exceeding the Learning Results standards in 2000-2001. Maine students scored slightly below the national average in math and equal to the national average in the verbal on the 2001 SATs.

These and many other facts are provided in the 91-page report. The entire report is available online at http://cepare.usm.maine.edu/
