It's Far From Over: The Impact on Maine's Muslim Communities
Post 9/11
The Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence (CPHV) held
a press conference at 10 a.m., Monday, June 17 at the Reiche
School playground to release its report on the aftermath of
the September 11th terrorist attack on Maine's Muslim Communities.
The report is the compilation of over 40 interviews with
Muslim families living in Portland, Lewiston and elsewhere
in Maine on what life has been like for them since the attack.
The interviews were conducted by four members of the Muslim
community from Afghanistan, Somalia, Nigeria and Libya.
The results are sobering. Today, nine months later, the degree
of fear, prejudice and backlash among Maine's Muslim families
is still very high and very real.
Steve Wessler (director of CPHV), Steven Rowe, Maine's Attorney
General, Portland Mayor Karen Geraghty, and the interviewers
(Najim Animashaun, Nasir Shir, Awaralla Hashi-Aldus and Mansour
Al-Alwi) were on hand to discuss the details of the report
and make recommendations for future action.
If you are interested in the report, but were unable to attend
the press conference, please contact Steve Wessler at 780-4756,
or Betsy Sweet at 780-4756.

Globe's coverage of this report.
