Law School and Bernstein Shur Sawyer & Nelson Announce Bernstein Family Scholarship
The University of Maine School of Law announced today that the scholarship fund established in 1968 in memory of the late Sumner Bernstein's father, Israel Bernstein, will be expanded and, with the consent of the University System Board of Trustees and full support of the Bernstein Family, will be renamed the Sumner and Israel Bernstein Scholarship Fund.
The law firm of Bernstein Shur Sawyer and Nelson also announced its commitment to make a generous gift to the Fund in memory of Sumner Bernstein, a prominent Portland attorney and community leader, who died on June 24. Sumner Bernstein, a senior partner of the firm for more than 50 years, also served as an adjunct professor at the Maine Law School and at its predecessor institution, Portland University Law School.
Bernstein Shur Sawyer and Nelson managing partner, Gregory A. Tselikis, Maine Law Class of 1969, noted that Bernstein was a man who labored all his life for good causes. "He taught us the meaning of integrity," he said. "His legal skills inspired us to became a great law firm. By the sheer force of his goodness, he elevated all those who knew him well."
Commenting on the Bernstein Scholarship Fund, Charles E. Miller, Maine Law Class of 1979, said, "Sumner had many passions. One of them was assisting law students as an adjunct professor at the University of Maine School of Law, the school from which both his wife Rosalyne and his son Andy received their law degrees. The Bernstein Scholarship at Maine Law has assisted generations of students grappling with the high cost of a legal education, and the firm wants to do all it can to ensure that those benefits will continue in the future."
"Sumner Bernstein was an integral part of the Maine Law School family for more than four decades," said Dean Colleen Khoury. "He honored us with his involvement and his guidance
-- as an adjunct professor, as a member of the Law School's Board of Visitors and as a regular participant in Law School activities and lectures. The enhancement of the Bernstein Scholarship Fund (to include both Sumner and Israel Bernstein) is a fitting tribute indeed to this brilliant and compassionate member of the legal community."
