USM Baseball Coach Garners 500th Win
Ed Flaherty, head coach of the University of Southern Maine baseball program, achieved the 500th win of his career at a game on Saturday, April 20, during the first game of a double-header against the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Until then, there had been only 17 coaches in Division III, among active coaches nationwide, who had 500 or more career wins. Flaherty, who is now in his 17th year at USM, achieved this record unusually early in his career.
During his years at USM, Flaherty has established the Huskies program as one of the nation's finest, with post-season appearances in every season he has coached. USM Baseball has won two National Championships under Flaherty, the most recent in 1997. Many of USM's baseball alumni have gone on to play professionally.
Flaherty has received many coaching honors and has an outstanding reputation for his teaching abilities and for his discipline and work ethic. His instructional baseball camps are among the most highly regarded in New England. Flaherty was inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the State of Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993.
Flaherty earned an undergraduate education degree with double majors in history and math from the University of Maine. He holds a master’s in administration from USM.
