Leading NY Architect to Discuss Role of Architecture and Cultural Identity
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to Sponsor Talk by Designer of NYC Planetarium
Portland- As part of its Distinguished Lecture Series, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine, is sponsoring a presentation by Todd Schliemann FAIA, a Partner and Design Principal in Polshek Partnership Architects, an internationally acclaimed 150-person architecture firm in New York City. The July 25th lecture will be held at 10 a.m. in air-conditioned Luther Bonney Auditorium on the Portland Campus, and focus on the implications of the meaning behind the bricks and mortar of contemporary public architecture. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
“Architecture is a powerful communicator of cultural identity,” according to Schliemann. “A public building describes our aspirations, character, collective memories, and leaves behind a text, not unlike that of a book, which defines a story of who we are.” Schliemann will use examples of his recent work, and the work of others during his talk.
The majority of Mr. Schliemann’s work is for not-for-profit educational, cultural, scientific, and governmental institutions. His buildings have received numerous local, state, and national awards for design excellence, including four from the American Institute for Architects (AIA), where he was recently named a Fellow. His most recently completed project, the Rose Center for Earth and Space which houses the new Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History is, according to the Architectural Record “already an icon on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.”
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a program sponsored by the University of Southern Maine, provides a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for persons 55 years of age or older.
