USM Hosts National Youth Sports Program for Low Income Children
This will be the first year that the University of Southern Maine will be a host site for the federally-funded National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) from Monday, July 8 through Friday, August 9. The program combines sport instruction with educational enrichment programs for children aged 10-16. It is free for children in York and Cumberland counties whose families meet Department of Health and Human Services income guidelines.
Participating children receive a NYSP t-shirt, breakfast and lunch, transportation to USM’s Portland campus, a medical examination (if necessary), accident medical insurance coverage, and the opportunity to interact with college students and staff.
Activities include swimming lessons at Portland’s Reiche School, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, football and fitness/conditioning. All equipment is provided. The children will also receive instruction on alcohol and drug abuse prevention, nutrition, health and career opportunities. All activities, except the swimming lessons, will take place on USM’s Portland campus and nearby Deering Oaks Park.
NYSP has been in existence since 1969 and over 200 colleges nationwide will be offering the program this summer.
