SMTC-USM Transfers Made Easier

The University of Southern Maine has been working with the Maine Technical College System to facilitate transfer of credits between USM and the campuses of the Maine Technical College System as part of an effort to meet Governor Angus King’s request for a comprehensive, coordinated community college plan in Maine.

Most recently, USM has forged an agreement with Southern Maine Technical College (SMTC) for students interested in liberal arts programs at the two schools. The agreement will make it easier for students in SMTC's liberal studies program to continue their education by transferring credits from that program into majors within USM's College of Arts and Sciences. The liberal studies program is a recent addition to the SMTC curriculum. The agreement clarifies equivalent courses in the two institutions so students planning to advance to a four-year program understand what courses they need to take in sequence.

This agreement expands earlier ones between USM and SMTC pertaining to courses in nursing, applied science, and business programs. These agreements enable students to complete the two-year associate degree program at the technical college and then move into four-year baccalaureate programs at USM. USM has about 20 transfer agreements with institutions of the Maine Technical College System.
