Master’s Degree in Accounting

The University of Southern Maine has opened a new master’s program in accounting to meet the demand for accountants, and the new requirements of the state’s Certified Public Accountant exam.

As of the year 2002, students will be required to have 150 credit hours to take the CPA exam in Maine. This new degree is in hopes of fulfilling those extra 30 credit hours put in place by the Maine legislature in 1997.

Accountants are now in great demand throughout the public and business sector. The creation of a master’s program at USM is in hopes of keeping students who choose this field of study to stay in Maine instead of leaving the state in search of a degree.

The degree was recently approved by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees. Applications for the spring semester are accepted until December 1.
