The Media and Violence Against Women

Editor’s Note: In March, Casco Bay Weekly became the center of passionate discussion at USM and in the off-campus community for publication of two cartoons that some groups found offensive. The informal campus debate on free speech that resulted will be followed up with an opportunity to include more viewpoints in this discussion. A panel, organized by USM’s Women’s Resource Center, Sexual Assault Response Services, Family Crisis Services, and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, will bring together members of the print, radio, and television media, including Lael Morgan, publisher of the Casco Bay Weekly, and Robert McAfee, former president of the American Medical Association, to discuss the First Amendment, ethical journalism, the media and its role and responsibility in depicting and perhaps normalizing violence against women.

Event: Community forum : "What's the Problem?: The Media and Violence Against Women"

Time/Date: 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 17

Place: Luther Bonney Auditorium

Free and open to the public.

Contact: For more information, call Beth Martin, coordinator of women’s resources at USM, 780-4996.
