Male Nurses

Men comprise about five percent of the nursing workforce nationally, and that number’s going up. As illustrated by Ben Stiller’s new hit movie “Meet the Parents,”in which he is ridiculed for being a male nurse, the non-traditional career can be misunderstood and stressful. An expert on this career choice for men will be on the USM campus Wednesday and Thursday, October 18 and 19 to talk to nursing professionals and students role issues for male nurses and other topics in nursing.

Daniel J. Pesut, professor and department chair at Indiana University School of Nursing, will talk on “The Mentoring Spirit: Principles and Practices that Support Men in Nursing,” at 4-6:30 p.m. , Wednesday, October 18; on “Leadership: Aligning Vision and Action,” 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, October 18; and “Moving Beyond Nursing Process,”
at 10:30-2:30 p.m., Thursday, October 19.

Pesut is available to talk to media about male nurses and other issues. To arrange an interview, call Bob Caswell or Susan Swain at USM’s Media Relations Office, 780-4200.
