Julia Butterfly Hill to Speak at USM JULIA BUTTERFLY HILL -- FROM REDWOODS TO USM She came to fame in December of 1997 when she climbed a 1,000-year-old redwood tree in California and remained there, 180 feet above the ground, for two years to protest logging practices and to call for permanent protection of the last three percent of the worlds ancient redwood trees. Her name is Julia Butterfly Hill, an environmental activist and author. She will be speaking Thursday, March 8 at the Sullivan Gymnasium on the USM Portland campus, at 7:30 p.m. Her presentation is titled The Legacy of Luna. Luna is what she calls the tree she lived in and the hillside on which it stands. The lecture is free and open to the public. It is the keynote event in USMs celebration of Womens History Month, 2001. There will also be a Womens History Month dinner and reception with Ms. Hill at 5:00 p.m. March 8th at the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland. Cost is $15 ($10 for students). In addition to Ms. Hill, USMs Womens Studies is sponsoring a series of events on the theme Remaking the World: Women and the Environment this spring. Programs include:
