Amero Named to Muskie Fellowship

Former Maine Senate Minority Leader Jane A. Amero of Cape Elizabeth has joined the University of Southern Maine's Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service.

Amero has been named a Muskie Public Policy Fellow, a position established in 1998 to attract individuals with distinguished records of public service who can share their expertise in classrooms and contribute to the school's research and public service activities. The first Policy Fellow was former Maine Speaker of the House Elizabeth Mitchell.

"Jane's extensive background in development of education policy at the local, state and regional levels will be an invaluable resource, especially at a school with an interdisciplinary curriculum that strives to balance theory and hands-on experience," said Robert L. Woodbury, dean of the Muskie School. “The Muskie School, as well as the College of Education and Human Development, will be drawing on Jane's expertise and interests.”
Amero, a native of Rumford, graduated from Cornell and is a former teacher. She has served most recently as Republican Leader of the Maine State Senate and before that as Assistant Majority Leader and Chair of the Legislative Council. She has also served as Chair of the Cape Elizabeth Town Council and the School Board, Chair of the Maine State Board of Education and innumerable commissions on education, reapportionment, school funding, and local government. She has also won many state and national awards, including the Distinguished Service Award of the National Association of State Boards of Education.
The Muskie School offers master's programs in health policy and management, community planning and development, and a master's and Ph.D. in public policy and management. Muskie faculty and staff conduct applied research projects in health and social service issues in all 16 Maine counties and throughout more than 35 other states.
