A Conversation with Maine’s Governors

The current governor of Maine, Angus King, along with two former governors, Ken Curtis and Joseph Brennan, will be speaking as part of the Policy Soundings series, co-sponsored by USM’s Muskie School of Public Service and the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. The program will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, at the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The three governors will be discussing their collective legacies and visions for the future of Maine.

King is the second Independent governor of Maine and is currently serving his second term.

Curtis and Brennan were both Democratic governors. Curtis, who served from 1967-75, presided over the modernization and reformation of Maine state government. During his term, the sales tax was implemented, which created a new revenue source for the state. After serving as governor, Curtis was named ambassador to Canada under President Jimmy Carter, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and president of Maine Maritime Academy.

Brennan served as governor from 1979-87. Since leaving office, Brennan has served as the U.S. representative from 1987-91, as a lawyer-lobbyist in Washington from 1991-93 and currently as a member of the Federal Maritime Commission to which he was appointed in 1999.
