and MARGARET A. FOURNIER, associate professor of nursing,
presented "Health Screening of Older Women Living on Two Remote
Islands Off the Coast of Maine" at the 2004 National Rural
Women's Health Conference in Hershey, Penn., in October.
TINA CLAIBORNE, assistant professor of sports medicine,
presented a paper on "ACL Prevention Programs: Dispelling
the Myths," at the Scholarship of Discovery, Maine Athletic
Trainers Association Meeting, in Waterville last May.
KAREN A. CROTEAU, associate professor of sports medicine,
presented a paper on "Comparison of Pedometer-based and Time-based
Physical Activity Interventions" at the annual meeting of
the American College of Sports Medicine, in Indianapolis last
June.
J. EDWARD GLEASON, planetarium manager, was awarded
the Phillip Marcoux Prize for outstanding service in informal
science education for his outreach work bringing astronomy
experiences to groups in southern Maine by the Maine Science
Teachers Association at a ceremony on October 8.
VALERIE A. HART, associate professor of nursing, presented
"Postpartum Depression: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment
Options" for the USM Center for Continuing Education on October
22.
PHYLLIS F. HEALY, associate professor of nursing,
attended the 21st annual fall conference of the American Association
of the History of Nursing in Charleston, South Carolina, last
October.
H. DRAPER HUNT III, professor emeritus of history,
was invited by Karen Baldacci to give a lecture at the Blaine
House on the history of the governor's mansion.
PAUL JOHNSON, assistant professor of social work,
co-authored an article, "Play the Lantern of Hope," published
in the Journal of Poetry Therapy. He also presented a paper,
"Changing Perceptions: Understanding Ourselves, Understanding
the World," at the International Group Work Conference in
Detroit last October. In addition, he presented a multicultural
program at the Center For Grieving Children in October, and
was awarded the Collaborative Leadership Award by the Greater
Portland Institute for Civic Leadership.
DAVID B. JONES, associate professor of therapeutic
recreation and leisure studies, published an article, "Disabled
Kids Unwelcome on Many Playgrounds," in the Portland Press
Herald's "Maine Voices" on September 14, 2004.
ASSUNTA KENT, associate professor of theatre, led
a discussion and moderated readings from the book "At Play:
An Anthology of Maine Drama" at Longfellow Books, Portland,
on September 12. Kent wrote the preface of the book, which
is published by Levant Heritage Library.
RITA KISSEN, professor of education, is the author
of "Power and Empowerment in the Classroom," which appears
in the fall 2004 issue of the Journal of Lesbian and Gay Issues
in Education. Kissen also was invited to serve on the Journal's
editorial board.
KIMBERLY A. MOODY, associate professor of nursing,
was invited to present a paper titled, "Adherence Issues When
Working With Substance Abusers" at the Behavioral Health 2004,
Annual Fall Forum on Addiction, Co-Occurring Disorders, and
Culture held in Orlando last October.
NANCY RICHESON, assistant professor of therapeutic
recreation, published an article on "Air Mat Therapy for the
Treatment of Agitated Wandering: An Evidence-Based Therapeutic
Recreation Intervention" in the journal of the American Therapeutic
Recreation Research Institute in October 2004, and presented
on this topic, and non-drug approaches to pain, at the American
Therapeutic Recreation Association in Kansas City in October,
2004.
TRAVIS P. WAGNER, assistant professor of environmental
science and policy, had his article, "Hazardous Waste: Evolution
of a National Environmental Problem," appear in the Journal
of Policy History (Vol. 16, No. 4).
DOROTHY WOODS SMITH, associate professor emerita of
nursing, wrote the research section for the "Therapeutic Touch
Handbook" (2003, Scribe Press).
