KIMBERLY COOK, chair and associate professor of criminology,
presented "The Promise of Restorative Justice," at the University
of Dayton's International Conference on Violence Against Women
and Human Rights on February 28.
MICHAEL S. HAMILTON, associate professor of political
science, was appointed by the Gorham Town Council to the Gorham
Parks and Conservation Commission. He was also a successful
bidder for the right to emit 14,000 pounds of air pollution
per year in the annual auction of sulfur dioxide emissions
allowances conducted March 22, by the Chicago Board of Trade.
Bidding on behalf of the Acid Rain Retirement Fund, of which
he is a founder and secretary-treasurer, these 14,000 pounds
of pollution will be permanently retired.
MARY KELLEY, project specialist, Muskie School's Center
for Learning, had her community inclusion project featured
in the internationally distributed Inclusion News 2004. Mary
works with the State Department of Behavioral and Developmental
Services on inclusion of adults with disabilities in their
communities, and has coordinated two statewide conferences
in Maine on the topic.
MARK LAPPING, professor of public policy and management,
Muskie School of Public Service, was interviewed about work
he did while dean of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning
and Public Policy at Rutgers University for the article "The
Food Pipeline" in the American Planning Association's March
2004 edition of Planning.
W. BUMPER WHITE, associate professor and coordinator
of the CLASS PDS program, presented at the Harvard Graduate
School of Education earlier this year. A team made up of USM-LA
faculty and Auburn Middle School teachers, delivered the presentation
as part of the Northeast Regional Community Schools' Forum
titled "Building Strong Community Schools: Now More Than Ever."
They led a panel presentation called "The Community as Curriculum."
White received the Maine Campus Compact 2004 Donald Harward
Faculty Award for Service Learning Experience from Governor
John Baldacci and Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron.
He also presented "The PDS Initiative: Learning from the Past,
Surviving the Present and Planning for the Future: Resiliency
Through a Systems Approach Model" at the 2004 Professional
Development Schools National Conference in Orlando.
