SUSIE R. BOCK, director, Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, and BOB GREENE, chair of the Sampson Center Steering Committee, contributed to Maine´s Visible Black History, a book edited by H. H. Price and Gerald E. Talbot and recently published by Tilbury House. JANIS C. CHILDS, associate professor of nursing and LRC director, CONHP, presented "Opportunities for Research in the LRC" at the 2006 biennial New England Nursing Lab Coordinator Peer Group meeting at Northeastern University. ROBERT S. CASWELL, executive director, Office of Public Affairs, facilitated the "Legislative Perspectives on Higher Education" panel at the University of Maine System State Relations and Advocacy Retreat held last month in Portland. Caswell also has been re-elected chair of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Public Relations Advisory Council. TINA CLAIBORNE, assistant professor of sports medicine, CONHP, presented "The Effects of Gluteus Medius and Rectus Femoris Fatigue on EMG and Center of Pressure Measurements" at the American College of Sports Medicine National Convention last May in Denver. JOSEPH A. CONFORTI, professor, American and New England Studies, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), was interviewed by C-Span´s Book TV in May for his book, Saints and Strangers: New England in British North America, published by The Johns Hopkins University Press. MICHELLE DRUCKER, manager, Leadership and Organizational Development, Human Resources, has received a one-year, part-time appointment with the University of Maine System to design and implement a Supervisor Development Institute on all UMS campuses and at the System office. This follows a feasibility study she conducted in 2006, based on USM´s supervisory program. ANNIE FINCH, director, Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing, CAS, was recently honored with a page on poets.org, the official Web site of the Academy of American Poets, and was named "Poet of the Month" for June at poetrynet.org (http://www.poetrynet.org/month/archive/finch/index.htm). Her essay, "Passion in Translation," appeared in Russian translation in the online journal StoronySveta www.stosvet.net/3/finch/index.html. RACHEL A. FROST, technology trainer II, IPSI, Muskie School of Public Service, recently presented "Looking Back to Help the Future: Best Practices for Implementing an E-Learning Project" at the Information Technology Conference last June in Sturbridge, Mass. DEE GARDNER, director of undergraduate admission, received the 2006 Counselor of the Year Award, presented by the New England Association for College Admission Counseling. JOEL I. GOLD, chair, Accounting Department, professor of finance, School of Business (SB), co-wrote, "Risk Management for the Family, The Desirability of Long-Term Care Insurance," one of three papers to receive a 2006 Financial Frontiers Award from the Financial Planning Association and Janus. MICHELLE VASQUEZ JACOBUS, assistant professor, Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC), and her family were presented a sentiment of honor last May before the Maine State Legislature for her work with the Lewiston Youth Empowerment Program. DAVID B. JONES, associate professor of recreation and leisure studies, CONHP, delivered the keynote address on "Community Participation: Recreation and Leisure Activities for Youth with Disabilities in Maine" last May at the Maine Transition Network/Committee on Transition meeting in Bangor. ANNE B. KEITH, associate professor of nursing, CONHP, was awarded the "Real Heroes Award" by the American Red Cross in Portland for outstanding medical outreach in the Dominican Republic. WILLIAM T. McCULLOUGH, associate professor of recreation and leisure studies, CONHP, presented "Therapeutic Recreation in Your Community: Best Management Practices" at the 2006 Maine Recreation and Park Association annual conference last April in Bethel. LINDA MEYER, associate professor and department chair of recreation and leisure studies, CONHP, presented "The PVC Camera Holder for Persons with Left-Hand Use Only" at the Stepping Back into Life Disability Exposition held last May in Kennebunk. NANCY RICHESON, assistant professor of recreation and leisure studies, CONHP, and DAVID B. JONES, associate professor of recreation and leisure studies, CONHP, presented "A Pedometer Based Physical Activity Program for Older Adults" at the 2006 Maine Recreation and Park Association annual conference held last April in Bethel. SUSAN B. SEPPLES, associate professor and director of nursing, CONHP, and JANIS CHILDS, associate professor of nursing and LRC director, CONHP, published "Clinical Teaching by Simulation: Lessons Learned from a Complex Patient Care Scenario," in Nursing Education Perspectives (Vol. 27, No. 3). JUDITH A. SPROSS, associate professor of nursing, CONHP, represented the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, at a meeting of stakeholders convened to develop a national consensus on clinical nurse specialist competencies. She also convened an exploratory meeting of clinical nurse specialists in Maine to determine whether to establish a Maine affiliate of the National Association of Clinical Nursing Specialists. She was appointed co-chair of the education committee of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists´ Education for 2006-2007. SHARMON TONER, administrative manager, CAS, displayed her painting "Filli" at Retinal Delights, a juried show held this summer in Robie Andrews Hall in Gorham. TRAVIS M. WAGNER, assistant professor of environmental science and policy, School of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (ASET), ROBERT M. SANFORD, associate professor of environmental science and policy, ASET, and SAMANTHA LANGLEY-TURNBAUGH, associate professor of environmental science and policy, ASET, co-authored a paper, "Using a Scientific Paper Format to Foster Problem—Based Cohort—Learning in Undergraduate Environmental Science," published in the Journal of Natural Resources and Life Science Education.
