LIBBY BARRETT, coordinator of photography and design,
was invited to show her painted floor cloths as part of the
"Work of the Hand," show at the Center for Maine Contemporary
Art in Rockport, October 10-19.
AL BEAN, director of athletics and recreation, was
asked to serve as national chair of the NCAA Division III
Women's Ice Hockey Committee during the final year of his
service to the committee.
MERLE D. GUAY, professor of mathematics and statistics,
had his research paper, "An Introduction to Preconvexity Spaces,"
accepted for publication in the refereed journal, Acta Math.
Hungar.
CHRISTY HAMMER, associate professor of social and
behavioral sciences, Lewiston-Auburn College, presented a
paper, "Practicing Sociology of Education: Social Reproduction
and Constructivism in the Lives of Inservice Teachers," at
the 11th Annual International Conference on Thinking in Phoenix,
on July 28, 2003. The paper will be published in the conference
proceedings.
TERESA A. HUBLEY, research associate, IPSI, Muskie
School, was selected to present the paper she co-authored,
"Evaluating Maine's Lead Education Project," during the session
on "Nutrition and Environmental Factors in Maternal and Child
Health" at the 131st annual meeting of the American Public
Health Association, November 15-19, in San Francisco.
ROBERT LEHMANN, assistant professor of music, conducted
the All-State Festival Orchestras in California and Maine,
and was a guest artist with the DaPonte Quartet in June. He
was invited to conduct the St. John Chamber Orchestra in Stockton,
California in January.
CARTER MANNY, associate professor of business law,
presented a paper titled "Canning Spam: U.S. and European
Legislative Restraints On Unsolicited Commercial E-mail" at
the annual meeting of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business
in Nashville on August 15, 2003. His article, "Privacy Protection
for Health Information Transferred Between the European Union
and the U.S.: A Comparison of Legal Frameworks," was published
in Business Law Review (Vol. 36, pp. 107-130).
MICHAEL O'DONNELL, professor of education, and MARGO
WOOD, associate provost and dean of graduate studies and
professor of education, are authors of the third edition of
"Becoming a Reader: A Developmental Approach to Reading Instruction"
(Allyn & Bacon, 2004).
DAVID PIRANI, director of admission, has been selected
to serve on The Princeton Review Higher Education Advisory
Board.
THOMAS POWER, associate professor of theatre, will
have a staged reading of his new play, "The Bridge" at the
Theater Project in Brunswick at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November
7. His musical-drama, "Grannia", will be produced at The Mac
Theater in Chicago in September of 2004.
NANCY RICHESON, assistant professor of therapeutic
recreation, was awarded the American Therapeutic Recreation
Association Member of the Year Award at the 2003 awards ceremony
held during the annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Richeson
is an active member of ATRA as well as her local chapter affiliate.
BARRY RODRIGUE, assistant professor of arts and humanities,
Lewiston-Auburn College, and LAC student Marie Jones gave
the inaugural presentation for Sagadahoc Preservation's Fall
Lecture Series in Bath, on September 9, at which they discussed
their research about ethnic and labor diversity of Bath, Maine,
in 1850. Rodrigue was also promoted to the Level 1 list for
Historical Archeologists in Maine by the State Historic Preservation
Commission.
J. MARK SCEARCE, assistant professor of music, received
three internal grants for copying his music and two commissions
this summer: one for the Choral Arts Society of Portland to
premiere at Christmas; the other a ballet for the Nashville
Ballet and Chamber Orchestra, which premiered October 17.
The Fry Street Quartet performed the Maine premiere of his
work at the opening Faculty Concert Series in Corthell Hall
October 3, and the Bangor Symphony performed the Maine premiere
of another of his works during their season opening performance
on September 21. In addition, he was just elected to the new
Gen Ed Council.
LEONARD SHEDLETSKY, professor of communication, co-authored
the forthcoming book "Human Communication on the Internet"
(Allyn & Bacon, 2004).
