Maine’s former Chief Justice, Daniel Wathen, will give the 2002 Commencement address at USM’s 122nd Commencement ceremony, to be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, in the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.
Civic leader Rosalyne S. Bernstein of Portland, former chair of the USM Board of Visitors, will receive an honorary degree during the ceremony, and Wathen, Marilyn Moss Rockefeller, and the late Ladd Heldenbrand will be recognized with Distinguished Achievement Awards.
Rockefeller, chair of the board of Moss Inc., has served many organizations, including the Natural Resources Council of Maine, the Equity Institute, Common Good, the Nature Conservancy, the Family Planning Association of Maine, and the Maine Community Foundation. Heldenbrand, who will be recognized posthumously, worked on many projects to improve Portland and served on the boards of the Audubon Society, the Blind Children’s Resource Center, and the Salvation Army. Wathen, a Maine native and graduate of the University of Maine School of Law, served in the state judicial system from 1977 until October 2001, when he resigned to run for governor. He later withdrew his candidacy and joined the Pierce Atwood law firm.
Retired faculty who will be honored during Commencement with emeriti status are Libby Cohen, professor of education; Sallie Nealand, assistant professor of nursing; and Robert French, associate professor of geography. Among the approximately 1350 students eligible for graduation is this year’s Student Commencement Speaker, Jelilat Oyetunji of Nigeria, a computer science major.
Parking for faculty and staff participating in Commencement is in the Anthem lot across from the Civic Center. Shuttle buses will leave the Woodbury Campus Center for the Civic Center, starting at 7 a.m., and returning to campus at noon.
