This painted telephone pole was done by fifth grade students in Whitefield, Maine, under the supervision of artist Natasha Mayers. It depicts people, places and events of local history. The art is part of a project to demonstrate the phenomenon of bringing community members together with artists about a particular place and its history.
These efforts help to create community identity, according to a conference on March 18, sponsored by the USM Department of Art with funding from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission.
Permanent photographic and video recordings of the painted poles were funded by the Maine Humanities Council. (photo Natasha Mayers)
