Peter Aicher received his A.B. in English from Colgate University and his Ph.D. in classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His literary background prepared him for the courses in Latin and ancient Greek that he frequently teaches at USM, as well as courses in epic poetry and the Greek and Latin origins of English words.
A year spent teaching in Rome led him in new directions, and resulted in numerous articles on ancient and modern Rome, as well as two books: Guide to the Aqueducts of Ancient Rome and Rome Alive: A Source-Guide to the Ancient City, a two-volume guide to the city of Rome based on ancient Greek and Roman writings about the capital. He has appeared in several television specials on Roman aqueducts, including NOVA’s "Secrets of Lost Empires: Roman Bath," and has lectured widely on ancient literature and Rome for both academic and non-academic audiences.
