Other Requirements for Teacher Certification in Maine
Praxis tests are required for
teacher certification in the state of Maine.
- Praxis I is required of all new candidates for teacher certification.
- Praxis II Mathematics Subject Assessment is required of all new candidates for teacher certification and currently-certified teachers seeking new endorsements. It may also be used by Maine teachers to meet No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Teacher requirements.
- The Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Assessment is required of students who do not complete an approved teacher preparation program. Secondary Mathematics Education students do not need to take the PLT.
The Secondary Mathematics Education program requires passage of the Praxis I prior to candidacy and commencing student teaching.
Passage of the Praxis II Mathematics Subject Assessment is required before program completion.
In addition, a Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) is required of all employees of schools systems and persons employed by others on behalf of school systems in Maine. Fingerprinting is also required. Visit the Maine Department of Education Certification web site for more information. |
