In June 2007, the University of Southern Maine completed Transforming USM: The Capital Campaign (TUSM), the largest capital campaign in the history of the University.
The Campaign raised $33 million. Highlights included:
• An unprecedented 12 gifts of $1 million or more
• USM’s largest gift ever from an alumna, $1.1 million
• A $750,000 challenge grant from the prestigious Kresge Foundation.
More than $17 million was raised for capital projects, $2.8 million for the Annual Fund, and $8.9 million toward endowment. For the first time, the Annual Fund exceeded $1 million.
TUSM began in April 2004 with the University Commons project as its centerpiece. Designed by Koetter Kim of Boston, the Commons will include the Wishcamper Center, which will house the national headquarters of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the Muskie School of Public Service. The project also includes an expansion of the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education, a redesign of the main entrance to the Glickman Family Library, and a public promenade.
The Wishcamper Center will enable USM to better serve students, and it will serve as a tangible reflection of the quality of programs and of our continued commitment to educational outreach for the community. The project will transform the Portland campus into a vibrant hub for civic engagement and education.
USM celebrated the completion of TUSM in September 2007 at the Abromson Community Education Center, where more than 300 donors, volunteers, faculty, and staff joined in the celebration. Dick McGoldrick and Carol Wishcamper, co-chairs of the Campaign, were honored for their support, leadership, and dedication to the University.
