Construction Update

USM President Pattenaude and Rep. Tom Allen sign the top beam before it was hoisted into position atop the Bioscience Research Wing.

• The lower half of the Portland campus, east of Brighton Avenue, continues its impressive transformation. The USM Bioscience Research Wing, which opened in June of 2003, is undergoing the addition of three floors to the two-story building. The facility, funded through the state's R&D initiative, enables researchers to attract external grants and generate the teaching and research needed to improve the regional economy by expanding biomedical research resources in the region.

The state's 2003 Jobs Bond is funding the $4.4 million addition to the two-story facility to be completed in early 2005.

The Joel and Linda Abromson Community Education Center, which includes a classroom building, a 1,200-space parking garage, the Hannaford Lecture Hall, and the Alumni Skywalk that crosses Bedford Street, is scheduled for completion in March of 2005.

The Advanced Technology Wing of the John Mitchell Center on the Gorham campus was slated for a grand opening in December of 2004. The $8 million, 20,000 square-foot facility provides new laboratory space for computer engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science, material and product testing, and electro-mechanical technology; expanded laboratory space for digital arts and technology; equipment and instrumentation to support engineering and technology labs; classrooms and seminar rooms; and environmental and safety upgrades.
