USM's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Named National Center

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at USM has been named the national center for a network of 48 such institutes throughout the nation.

The Bernard Osher Foundation designated the USM institute the National Resource Center for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, and donated sufficient endowment funds to support OLLI programs and services that will allow the institutes to coordinate activities and share their experiences.

As the National Resource Center, the USM institute will play a lead role in disseminating information on effective educational programming for adult
learners.

“The proportion of older people in the United States is growing rapidly, as is the demand for lifelong learning programs,” said USM President Richard L. Pattenaude. “Thanks to the leadership of USM&'s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the generosity of the Bernard Osher Foundation, we can now work to address that demand at a national level by sharing information and resources that can help build both stimulating learning opportunities and vibrant communities of older adults.”

What began in 1997 as USM's Senior College, now offers peer-taught courses, workshops and other activities to more than 800 adult learners, ages 55 and over.
