A Profile of Giving: Monique Y. Crochet

Monique Y. Crochet professor emerita of French, believes that education is essential to the nourishment of society. Society could not flourish without it, any more than the colorful flowers in her garden could survive without soil or water.

“Education is essential in terms of instilling values, providing a sense of beauty, and giving tools that allow you to face life and be happy, even in adversity,” she says. “When you learn a French sonnet, for example, no one can ever take that away from you. You will always have that sense of beauty and wonder.”

Professor Crochet’s life-long thirst for knowledge and her love of teaching inspired her to create a bequest that will create the Monique Crochet Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Monique Crochet Language Studies Fund.

As a member of the Benefactor Society, USM’s planned giving recognition society, Professor Crochet notes, “If a life has been devoted to education, it is a natural step to foster education after death.” In her view, these future gifts will provide vital nourishment to tomorrow’s youth, the flowers of our future.
