USM Student Participates in Inaugural Loaned Executive Program
Stephen Nelson '96, who holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and is working on his M.B.A. at USM's School of Business, is one of two M.B.A. students who participated this fall in a new loaned executive program.
Nelson, of Scarborough, who is an IT consultant for Keane, Inc., along with David Palmlund, of Portland, a 1998 Bates graduate, were “loaned” by their employers to work with other business leaders in workplace campaigns for United Way of Greater Portland. The MBA students receive graduate course credit for their work as interns.
The United Way of Greater Portland and USM School of Business jointly developed the program. Gorham Savings Bank provided financial support to cover the approximate $700 in tuition costs per student for a three-credit internship.
“Our students are receiving very tangible educational benefits in terms of solid, hands-on training in sales, management, and presentation skills, as well as a greater awareness of our region's social needs,” said Jack W. Trifts, dean of the USM School of Business, and a member of the United Way of Greater Portland Board of Directors. “It's a win-win for all concerned.”
“The United Way Loaned Executive program has given us access to a pool of motivated graduate students,” said Meg Baxter, president of the United Way of Greater Portland, “allowing us to maximize volunteer efforts on behalf of the community while offering a real-world learning environment for future business leaders.”
