James Smethurst earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and is an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He co-edited the book, Left of the Color Line: Race, Radicalism, and Twentieth-Century Literature of the United States, with Bill V. Mullen, which was published in Nov. 2003 by the University of North Carolina Press. The book is a collection of 15 essays exploring the impact of the organized Left and Leftist theory on American literature and culture from the 1920s to the present. James is also the author of The New Red Negro: The Literary Left and African-American Poetry, 1930-1946.

Gina M. Clark, tour operator and innkeeper, has been appointed to serve on the board of the Aroostook County Tourism Association.

Dean G. Bostock was promoted to partner status at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. Dean practices in the intellectual property section of the firm's Boston office, devoting a substantial part of his time to litigation. He has successfully litigated patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret cases in many courts throughout the United States. He also advises a number of U.S. companies in international litigation and licensing matters, including in Europe and the Far East. In the U.S., Dean has tried cases in federal trial courts and argued cases in the federal appeals courts. He also practices in the area of alternate dispute resolution. In this aspect of his practice, he has represented clients in arbitration proceedings before the American Arbitration Association and the International Chamber of Commerce. Dean is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Patent Law Association, and the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys. After earning his B.S. from USM, Dean earned his J.D. from Boston University in 1987.

1983

Sanford J. Prince IV became the superintendent of Windham Schools in 2003. He formerly worked as director of education planning for the Portland School Department. He received a degree in education from the University of Maine at Farmington and then worked for the Windham School Department as a special education teacher. He stayed there until 1985, receiving a master's degree in education from USM in 1983. Sanford later served as a principal of the Kindergarten Center in Gorham, and as principal at both White Rock Elementary School and Shaw Middle School. He and his wife, Susan, have three children, Jennifer, Clark, and Jack.

Ed Barks has written the book, The Truth About Public Speaking: The Three Keys to Great Presentations. The book is scheduled for a January 2005 release by Ogmios Publishing, with pre-publication sales beginning in November. As Ed states, “The rewards in life typically go to those who embrace communicating with the public. Leaders who succeed from the Fortune 500 CEO to the local nonprofit volunteer understand the need for gold-plated public speaking skills if they have any hope of advancing their careers and causes.” Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell wrote the book's forward. Ed is a trainer, author, and speaker who teaches business leaders how to deliver dynamic, message-packed presentations and how to work with the media. He has served as president of Barks Communications since its inception in 1997, enhancing the communication skills of more than 2,000 business leaders, government officials, nonprofit leaders, athletes, and entertainers.

Betsey Greenstein, president of Fleet Maine for the last five years, has been named president of Bank of America Maine. Bank of America merged with FleetBoston earlier this year. “As she demonstrated in her role as Maine president for Fleet, Betsey Greenstein will be a champion for customers and communities across the state,” noted Anne Finucane, the Northeast president for Bank of America. “Her history of community involvement and extensive knowledge of customer needs makes Greenstein the right leader to be stepping into this critical role.” Betsey is a board member of the Maine Mentoring Partnership and the Maine Bankers Association. She is also active as a volunteer for Well Suited, Inc., the AIDS Project, and the YWCA's Women of Achievement program.

1985

Paul DiMatteo, president of Maine Memorial Company in South Portland, was featured in a Maine Sunday Telegram story that spotlighted his job as a third generation stone cutter or “memorial artist.” He is the only certified memorialist in Maine, and one of only three in New England. Paul has been working in the field since taking over his family's business in 1988. He designs, carves, and engraves lettering and designs on finished pieces of granite and marble, a skill he learned from his father and grandfather. In the article, Paul noted that: “I'm not unlike an artist, but my gallery is a cemetery, where each piece of art tells something about an individual who has lived and walked amongst us.”

In August, Virgil Pete Bonneau was named director of logistics at Food Lion in Salisbury, N.C. In this position, Pete is developing and implementing an inbound supply chain process to further enable the efficient and effective management of cost, inventory levels, service levels, and quality. Pete joined Food Lion in 2000 as manager of reverse logistics. More recently, he served the company as supply chain manager. Prior to Food Lion, Pete worked for Hannaford Bros. in multiple positions. He resides in Huntersville, N.C. In addition to his work, he volunteers at the Second Harvest Metrolina Food Bank in Charlotte, N.C., and serves as executive treasurer for the Time Out Youth organization.

John Henderson, of Dover-Foxcroft, graduated from Maine Maritime Academy with an M.S. in logistics management. His capstone project applied logistics and supply chain management concepts to nonprofit volunteer development and retention. During the summer, he participated in the Maine Humanities Council's Views of the East program, an intensive seminar on the history and culture of China, Japan, and Korea. He also took a course through USM's Muskie School of Public Service, and is completing the Maine section of the Appalachian Trail.
