Jean Thompson Lyford of Brewer and Phyllis Infiorati Smith '41 of Bangor met halfway between Bangor and Portland with old friends Catherine Cay Howard of Lewiston and Mary Bennett MacVane for lunch and chitchat. Phyllis was Mary's Big Sister at Gorham.

A number of members of the class attended the 60th reunion in 2003: Barbara Libby Hoffman and her husband drove from Florida; Catherine Howard; Virginia “Ginny” Clark Ward and her husband, Neal Ward '47, of Damariscotta; and Virginia Davis Keniston brought her husband from the Bethel area. Betty Kennedy Tufts from Wells, Annette Hall Brooks from Rockland, Pearl Hartt-Wilbur from Rye, N.H., Esther Bennett Anderson from Saco, and Mary Bennett MacVane were the hearty group that made the day a “catching-up” affair. Pictures were snapped and sent to the group, for we all have memory books!

In June, Betty McCann, Caroline Cunningham Allen, and I attended Alumni Day. We enjoyed sharing with the Class of 1944, which was celebrating its 60th Reunion. Helen (Cox) Hamman Mitchell had traveled from Seattle. She had written a delightful book, Helen's Garden, about her time as a kindergarten teacher. Helen donated 20 copies to the Gorham Alumni Association to be given to anyone making a donation to the alumni scholarship endowment. Karen Oak '66, president of Gorham Alumni, announced that we had reached our goal of $20,000 to endow the scholarship. This will insure a Gorham Alumni Scholarship into the future.

In October ten classmates and four husbands met at Leedy's Restaurant in Alfred. After an enjoyable meal, I passed around a paper to get information for these notes. Betty Wiley Chapman wrote that she survived a terrible auto accident that totaled two cars. Masie McGraw Searles '45 noted that she was relieved to hear that her home in Florida survived Hurricane Ivan while she was on a trip to Glacier National Park. Helena Downs Wilcox wrote that she has stayed well. Josephine Blake Derocher wrote that she and her sister, Evelyn Blake Stacy '44, lost their younger sister Shirley suddenly on Sept. 20. Marian Hall Mitchell noted that she and Alden took two trips to Monhegan Island to look up their ancestors. Lois Knapp Thurston '45 wrote that she and Porter attended their granddaughter's graduation from medical school and the following week attended another granddaughter's graduation from Cornell. Caroline Cunningham Allen was going to the Midwest with her sister and husband to attend a wedding. Charlotte Watson Mason wrote that she has seven family members who have graduated from Gorham/USM. Elizabeth Betty McCann '45 noted that her third book was sent to the publishers. Her grandfather Daniel E. McCann founded the Portland-based McCann Truck Company, which operated from 1897-1957. Her father, Carl McCann, and his brother, Dennis, took over the company when their father died in 1907. The book is entitled, The McCann Fire Trucks, A Lasting Legacy. Betty said that she almost lost her oldest son Ralph following emergency surgery. He spent over a month in the hospital and two months in rehab. As of this writing, he hoped to go home in November. He lives alone so he has to be able to care for himself.

I did hear from Robin Tillson Grant, Catherine Shevlin, Florence Plummer Boston, and Edith Meserve Rice. I do hope they will be able to join us as we plan to join the Class of 1945 next year when they celebrate their 60th Reunion. We attended Gorham for three years with them.
