In August, nearly 100 alumni of Gorham Normal School, Gorham State Teachers College, and Gorham State College and their guests gathered on the Gorham campus for their annual summer reunion. The day began in the newly renovated Hastings Formal Lounge with a welcome from Robin Mullins ’91, ’98, president of the USM Alumni Association. Registrants enjoyed a light breakfast and the chance to socialize before the day’s festivities began. Members of the Class of 1957, celebrating their 50th reunion, had 26 classmates in attendance, and enjoyed a special class meeting at Bailey Hall, where they were presented with the Golden Grad Chronicles, a commemorative publication. After a delicious luncheon, guests were greeted and given updates on the University by Interim President Joe Wood, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development Betty Lou Whitford, and Director of Annual Giving Erin Macey. Interim President Wood then presided over the dedication of the Class of 1950’s reunion gift to the University, the restoration of Russell Hall doors. Alumni of the Class of 1950 generously donated funds to restore these doors, which serve as the entrance to historic Russell Hall. This gift complements the many renovations that have taken place over the years as a part of the Gorham Beautification Campaign and the many other improvements made by other reunion class years.
The restored doors include historic hardware and ornate brass studding, as well as refurbished framework.
Also at the reunion the Class of 1946 donated a wheelchair in memory of their beloved friend Elizabeth McCann ’45, who passed away in 2007. The wheelchair will be kept on the Gorham campus for any student or alumnus or alumna who might need it.
