1980s & 1990sIn February, Anne Harrison Jordan '81, '84L, who holds a bachelor's degree in political science from USM and a J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law, was nominated as Commissioner of Public Safety by Governor John Baldacci. “I have known Anne for a number of years and have been particularly impressed with her leadership as chair of the Governor's Advisory Board on Executive Clemency,” said Governor Baldacci. “Additionally, the experience Anne gained during her 22 years of advocacy, prosecutorial, and private practice gives her a broad understanding of all aspects of the workings of the public safety system and its dedicated workers and officials. Anne's strong legal background and accomplishments make her an outstanding candidate for this important position.” As chair of the Pardon Board since 2000, Anne has managed a challenging caseload. She was first appointed to the Pardon Board in 1991. She is a partner at the firm of Norman, Hanson and DeTroy, where she has specialized in trial law in the areas of insurance fraud, domestic relations, mediation and dispute resolution, and animal welfare. Upon approval by the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, Jordan must be confirmed by the Senate. In the fall, Martha (Mann) Davoli '87, '89 was elected vice president of the Maine Public Relations Council (MPRC) Board of Directors. She will serve as vice president until the end of 2007. A public relations professional since 1989, Martha is the director of public information and media services at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She has served on the MPRC board since 2003; she also serves as a Cub Scout volunteer and as a Maine director for the New England Society for Healthcare Communicators. A Scarborough resident, she earned her B.A. in communication. Jamie Morin-Reynolds '88 was promoted to senior vice president, Client Service Operations, effective January 1. In her more than nine years of experience at Wright Express, she has served as vice president of business initiatives management since 2005, playing a lead role in developing the company's quarterly technical releases and in all major business and customer implementations. After joining Wright Express in 1997, Morin was promoted to vice president of customer service in 1998, and has held a series of client operations positions with increasing responsibility since then. Before joining Wright Express, Jamie served as director of marketing and customer service at Portland Glass Company. She received a B.A. in communication. Luc Nya '96, '99 is the multicultural services coordinator for the state Department of Health and Human Services in Portland. His work involves helping refugees and immigrants access social and mental health services and working with caregivers to overcome the linguistic and cultural barriers that may arise. He came to Maine from Cameroon in 1992 to attend USM. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1996 and a master's degree in public policy and management in 1999. The American Counseling Association Foundation published an essay by Theresa Arita '97 entitled, “How could the counseling profession do more to reach those most in need of services?” Theresa is in the master's degree in school counseling program at USM. Only five awards were presented in the national competition and Theresa's essay was named the second runner-up. She plans to graduate in spring 2008 after completing her school counseling internship and wants to counsel adolescents in schools and community agencies. Joseph K. Loughlin '97 has been nominated for a prestigious Edgar award for his book, Finding Amy. The book, which Joe and mystery writer Kate Clark Flora co-wrote, tells the true story of an unusual several-month police investigation that resulted in the conviction of Russ Gorman for the murder of Amy St. Laurent. The Edgar awards are bestowed by the Mystery Writers of America. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in New York City in April. Joe graduated from USM with a master's degree in adult education. He is the deputy chief of police of the Portland Police Department. He is a 24-year veteran of the police force (see Alumni News section for more information about Joe.) Capt. Margaret “Peg” Deluca Klein '99, who holds a master's degree in educational leadership from USM, was named commandant of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy in the fall.
