Class Agents Other decades

1920s & 1930s

Class Agent Almery R. Hamblen '37 wrote that last summer the USM Alumni Office sent him a list of 37 surviving members of the GNS Class of 1937. “That is more than expected, since all of them have to be about 90 years of age, and the total class size was originally about 90,” he noted. “Congratulations to all of us!” Almery received letters from two classmates, Frances Merrill Libby '37 and Olive Draper Drew '37. “Thanks to both of them! I also saw Adena Smith while we were both visiting a relative in Gorham House last year. I also received a nice letter from the daughter of Ethel Cobb Pease '37, Sally Pease Humbert, who graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1970. Sally said that she and Ethel both studied history with Esther Wood, shared stories of Gorham, and both kept very dear friends that they made there. Thank you, Sally, for your nice words about our classmate, Ethel.

“Last summer, my wife Kay and I sold our place in Standish, as we both have difficulty with stairs, and the Standish home has two flights. We will be in our home at Merritt Island, Fla., most of the year. There are no stairs there. We hope to be able to go on shorter trips to various destinations, as the desire to travel occurs.”

Edith Karelis '39 wrote that she is still president of the Greater Haverhill Poets. Her poem, The Red Oak, was bought in New York for $250. The organization's newest book, Pen & Brush, contains paintings and illustrations. Edith and Saul have three children and six grandchildren. One granddaughter is a middle-grade teacher in Natick, Mass.
