    Youth Fitness Programming
    -acenscaThis course will aid fitness instructors in developing safe, fun and effective fitness programs for younger clients. Exercise selection and modification, equipment options, workout structure, volumes and intensities will be discussed.

    ACE National Exam Preparatory Class - This class is offered as preparation for the ACE Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer designations. The class will meet weekly to review & discuss the ACE preparation materials. Periodic quizzes and sample ACE exams will be utilized to measure student progress and identify areas of weakness. Following the class, USM will host the ACE examinations.

    Advanced Weight Training – This class will cover the definition of advanced weight training, differences in men’s and women’s training programs, alternate training methods, free weights vs. machines, training volume and intensity and designing programs for the advanced lifter. With permission of program manager, this course may be taken in place of Teaching Strength Training to fulfill core requirements. Prerequisites: Kinesiology. 8 week course.

    Anatomy and Physiology for Fitness Instructors - This course will include information on human anatomy and physiology as it relates to fitness instructors. Emphasis will be placed on the musculoskeletal systems and appropriate concepts within the cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory, endocrine and digestive systems. Lectures and laboratory experience with models, charts, and skeletons will be a major component of the course. ; Prerequisite: None. 12 week course

    Kinesiology - Using basic principles of kinesiology and biomechanics as well as concepts of developmental movement patterns, this course is designed to facilitate the understanding of the anatomy of movement as it relates to fitness and sports. This course also incorporates experiential teaching methods which will deepen and expand the understanding of each individual's own movement patterns and body/mind relationship.     NSCA-CPT National Exam Preparatory Class - This class is offered as preparation for the National Strength & Conditioning Association’s Certified Personal Trainer exam. The class will meet weekly to review the six parts of NSCA’s text in an effort to supplement student’s self-study efforts. At the conclusion of the class, USM will host and proctor the National Strength & Conditioning Association’s exam for the Certified Personal Trainer designation.     Physical Fitness Testing and Lifestyle Counseling - This course is designed to provide participants with practical knowledge in the areas of fitness testing and lifestyle counseling. The course will concentrate on evaluation techniques for all the components of fitness as well as behavior modification principles associated with lowing risk for heart disease. These components include body fat composition, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility. In addition, the participant will develop a safe exercise prescription utilizing all the information collected. Prerequisite: Exercise Physiology.

    Teaching Strength Training - The development of muscular strength is an important part of an overall fitness program for individuals of all ages. This course will offer theoretical concepts and practical applications for designing beginner and intermediate weight training programs. Modifications for different populations will also be incorporated into this course. Prerequisites: Kinesiology. (no class 5/19, 5/26)

    Speed, Agility and Plyometrics - acenscaThe ability to produce force in multiple directions over a short period of time is critical for many speed & power based activities. This course will provide an outline of the biomechanical analyses of sprinting and running and identify program design variables necessary to correct and/or improve the athlete’s performance capabilities. In addition, this course will review the principles of plyometric training along with several sport-specific examples of exercises & drills to implement. Half of the contact hours will be conducted in the classroom and the other half will be conducted on the track/grass/court.

    Wellness Coaching Using Mindfulness and Motivational Interviewing Techniques ace certified- Successfully coaching people to make healthy lifestyle changes requires not only content expertise but a keen understanding of human behavior. Understanding mindfulness and the coontext for ehavior change enables the wellness coach to teach the skills needed for making long term, permanent changes to support health. In this course we will discuss:

    bullet Neuropsychology of patterned behavior
    bullet Stages of Change Model
    bullet Motivational Interviewing in the context of lifestyle change
    bullet How to integrate Stages of Change Model with Motivational Interviewing
    bullet How to develop the skills to facilitate long term successful changes

    Participants are expected to apply information from each class meeting in actual coaching or training situations outside of class and present their case study at the conclusion of the course.

    Fitness Leadership - This comprehensive course is designed to cover major areas relevant to the teaching of adult fitness programs. Hands-on teaching experience will be an important component of this class. Topics include leadership, communication, program planning and design, instructional and motivational techniques.     Nutrition for Health and Fitness - Designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of food and nutrition and their relationship to exercise and good health. Topics to be covered include nutrients in food with special emphasis on optimal nutrition for exercise and sport, carbohydrate loading, nutritional quackery, energy cost of activity, evaluation of body composition and balancing energy input and output. Students will also evaluate popular weight loss methods and the relationship of nutrition to metabolic disorders and they will utilize nutritionist software to evaluate their own nutrient intake.
