Boutiques, Cafes, and Great Eats

Who doesn’t like to eat out?  Portland abounds with restaurants that range from breakfast burrito storefronts to the kind of upscale café you’ll be sure to visit with your parents for your birthday.

On Portland’s peninsula, funky Munjoy Hill cafés offer fresh Maine fare, while Old Port pubs serve up heartier grub, and live music.

What’ll it be? Sushi or vegan, Indian, or a cup of hearty clam chowder, Portland has the place for you. Check out Portland downtown district’s restaurant list.

Going organic? Whole Foods on Portland’s Somerset Street is the best place to eat and shop for those interested in healthier fare. It’s the place to be on Sundays during their weekly live Jazz Brunch.

Don’t just blow past Westbrook. That former mill town continues to enjoy a renaissance, with a new movie theater and a number of newly opened restaurants downtown featuring Thai, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, and nouvelle cuisine.

Got snacks? Greater Portland’s supermarkets are among the best in the nation, with Hannaford’s and Shaw’s located throughout Greater Portland.

In Portland’s Old Port, unique shops offer the opportunity to pick up gifts to send home, whether you’re looking for that special Portland T-shirt for your little brother or something a bit more elegant for your mom’s upcoming birthday.

Prefer national chains? You’ll find Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters, Borders, Best Buy, Gap and others in or around the state’s largest shopping center, the Maine Mall in South Portland. Target, Old Navy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, and others are also nearby.

Forgot to shop? Jewelry and clothing vendors visit USM’s student centers regularly, so you can pick up something on the way to lunch.
