College of Arts and Sciences

Chances are that no matter what your major, some or all of your courses will be in the College of Arts and Sciences. As part of the Core curriculum, courses in English, history, foreign languages, the visual and performing arts, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, philosophy, and political science to name just a few – form the foundation of all USM’s bachelor’s degrees. They give you a core set of skills and knowledge that boosts your professional abilities and enriches your personal life – and it comes in handy at trivia games.

With 45 undergraduate majors and minors to choose from or the ability to design your own major, it’s the perfect place to tap into your intellectual core. In the coming decades our knowledge-based economy will be increasingly reliant on people with degrees in the sciences, arts, and humanities. This is where you prepare.

  • Classes are small. Discussions are lively.
  • You’ll work closely with professors. Know them by name and they’ll know you.
  • See what you’ve learned come to life through research, internships, artistic pursuits, community service projects, and study abroad

We invite you explore our degree programs, e-mail us, or give us a call. We’re happy to answer questions, give you some insights into how our programs can benefit you, or talk to you about all the things you can do while you’re here… play the lead in a theater production, help research how electrical activity in the early stages of brain development helps the growth of neurons, study with Maine’s Poet Laureate (a USM professor), study how racism, sexism, class inequality, and heterosexism impact the perceived realities of crime, analyze the risk factors for breast cancer, including reproduction and familial patterns of cancer, perform in the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra.
