     Restorative School Practices Summer Institute

     Augusta, Maine

Sponsored by Maine Law & Civics Education, Peace &

Reconciliation Studies Program, and Restorative Justice

     Project of the Midcoast

This 3-day Summer Institute will introduce participants to restorative school practices and restorative discipline, part of an international restorative justice movement that is helping to create safe, fair and responsive schools in Maine, the U.S. and abroad. Within a whole school approach, these practices build caring school communities that support students, staff and administrators in feeling connected and respected, which enhances learning outcomes. All members of the community are accountable for their actions, resolve conflicts, create positive relationships, and build an inclusive, respectful school culture. Discipline becomes part of a learning environment featuring accountability and support rather than punishment and exclusion. The course will include presentation, discussion, interactive activies, and experience with the Circle process. Cost: $300 per person for the 3 days, which includes materials, lunches and refreshments.

Watch for more information about the Institute early in 2009!
