October 29, 2008 Advanced Bullying Prevention Workskhop University of Southern Maine Portland, Maine Sponsored by Maine Law & Civics Education Instructors: Chuck Saufler, M.Ed. and Pam Anderson, J.D. This one day advanced workshop in bullying prevention is intended for individuals and teams who have been trained and are implementing bullying prevention strategies in their schools.Workshop topics will include brain research on aggression and what to do about it; redirecting student behavior using restorative practices to build and maintain positive relationships; and incorporating these ideas into staff training. There will also be time to discuss other implementation issues. Where: Abromson Center, Rm. 214, USM in Portland When: 9 am - 3 pm Cost: $40 per person (includes materials and refreshments) Lunch: On your own. December 3-5, 2008 Bullying Prevention Training Institute University of Southern Maine Portland, Maine Sponsored by Maine Law & Civics Education Instructors: Chuck Saufler, M.Ed & Ansley Newton, M.Ed
The goal of this 3-day training institute is to prepare participants to coordinate a comprehensive, research-based bullying prevention program in their schools. Participants will learn the dynamics of bullying behavior and the systems needed to respond effectively to reduce its frequency. The institute trainers will disseminate research-based bullying prevention strategies, discuss how to develop and implement a comprehensive program, and include action planning on how best to utilize the information in each school. Participants will learn how to create and maintain effective work teams for bullying prevention. Persons from youth development organizations working in schools are also encouraged to attend. June 24 - 26, 2009 Restorative School Practices Summer Institute Augusta Civic Center Augusta, Maine Sponsored by Maine Law & Civics Education, Peace & Reconciliation Studies Program, and Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast This 3-day Summer Institute will introduce participants to restorative school practices and restorative discipline, part of an international restorative justice movement that is helping to create safe, fair and responsive schools in Maine, the U.S. and abroad. Within a whole school approach, these practices build caring school communities that support students, staff and administrators in feeling connected and respected, which enhances learning outcomes. All members of the community are accountable for their actions, resolve conflicts, create positive relationships, and build an inclusive, respectful school culture. Discipline becomes part of a learning environment featuring accountability and support rather than punishment and exclusion. The course will include presentation, discussion, interactive activies, and experience with the Circle process. Cost: $300 per person for the 3 days, which includes materials, lunches and refreshments. Watch for more information about the Institute early in 2009!
