Phase 1: INTRODUCE PROGRAM

  • Notify parents of the intent to address the issue and invite them to attend the first awareness presentation.
  • Generate administrative & staff support through a needs assessment and goal-setting.
  • Conduct a student bullying survey to establish baseline data.
  • Provide a bullying awareness presentation for the school community.
  • Secure funding for the program.
  • Select the coordinating committee.
  • Begin work on improving school climate to create a "community of caring."

Phase 2: TRAIN STAFF

  • Workshop day to present survey results and provide staff development in bullying education and prevention.
  • Orient the coordinating committee.
  • Introduce bullying education curricula and resource materials to staff.
  • Provide reflective practice meetings for staff.
  • Encourage staff to attend bullying prevention, conflict resolution, & character education workshops.
  • Continue work on improving school climate.

Phase 3: DEVELOP BULLYING PREVENTION POLICIES

  • Adopt a school policy that includes standards of conduct.
  • Provide parent/community awareness sessions.
  • Develop a record-keeping system.
  • Document incidents of bullying behavior consistently.
  • Link to discipline system through graduated consequences.
  • Include parental notification and parental meetings.
  • Continue work on improving school climate.

Phase 4: INTRODUCE BULLYING EDUCATION CURRICULUM

  • Select and purchase age-appropriate curricula and resource materials.
  • Integrate the curricula into all classrooms.
  • Support the bullying education lessons through the guidance program.
  • Continue work on improving school climate.

Phase 5: REINFORCE BULLYING PREVENTION

  • Develop a "telling climate" in the school so students report bullying to adults.
  • Provide appropriate interventions for students engaging in bullying behavior and their targets.
  • Link to social service and mental health resources in the school and community.
  • Create and maintain a "community of caring."
  • Update staff and train new staff periodically.
  • Continue work on improving school climate.

Phase 6: EVALUATE THE PROGRAM

  • Evaluate the program by reviewing program records, policies, and practices.
  • Re-administer the student bullying survey to measure changes.
  • Revise/update the program to meet changing needs.
  • Update staff and train new staff periodically.
  • Continue work on improving school climate.
