What to expect
When you have an appointment, you can expect your tutor to be there to help you with your academic needs. A tutor will expect you to have made your best effort before you arrive, and the tutors will ask you where you are stuck. Then, they will help you to see how you might move on.
Becoming an independent learner
The Learning Centers want to help you to become independent as a student. We understand how hard it can be sometimes to manage without a bit of help and guidance, so we will help you both with the immediate problem and with finding strategies for managing the underlying problems, such as how you might study more effectively or how you might structure similar problems in the future.
A place for students
The Learning Centers are entirely for students. We do not report to your teachers, unless you give us permission to do so. Most students do, however, want their teachers to be notified of this extra effort situation. We provide a friendly, supportive environment, and we will make serious efforts to help with academic problems.
Success
Every year we find students who were sure they
would not
be able to manage their math classes or ever get through the
introductory
literature classes because they just do not know what to write, and
every
year we find these students succeeding beyond their expectations.
Sometimes
just having a place to study where there is someone of whom they can
ask
a question is enough for them.
