The master of science in education degree in literacy education,
extended to Lewiston-Auburn College from USMs College of Education and Human
Development, provides teachers with a thorough understanding
of reading and writing processes and instruction. The purpose
of the program is to enable students to design and implement
appropriate up-to-date instruction in reading and writing
at all levels. Participants acquire the knowledge and skills
necessary to become effective advocates for improving literacy
instruction in their schools. The program is designed for
classroom teachers, literacy specialists, and other experienced
educators.
The degree requires 36 hours of coursework, including a summer
practicum (which must be taken on the Gorham campus) and successful
completion of a comprehensive examination. Literacy education
courses are offered at LAC every semester and in the summer.
Most students are part-time and complete the degree in three
to four years. Many of the courses in this program are also
open to non-matriculated students.
