Bumper White, Ph.D., associate professor of education at
USM’s Lewiston Auburn College (LAC), has been awarded
the Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence.
Governor John Baldacci presented the award at a State House
ceremony held recently in Augusta. This award is presented
through the Maine Campus Compact to faculty members who have
demonstrated a significant commitment to practicing and promoting
service learning. Harward honorees have created and implemented
projects that reflect the best practices of service-learning,
including reflection, community impact, reciprocity with the
community partner and creativity.
Dr. White, who has served as coordinator of the CLASS (Collaborative
Learning and School Success) teacher education program at
LAC since its inception in 1998, was cited for his efforts
in having students in this program work with local school
children on a variety of community projects. For example,
some CLASS students teamed up with staff and faculty members
to teach children the proper skills and techniques to broadcast
the daily news at Sherwood Heights Elementary School in Auburn.
Other students have worked with their mentor teachers to create
service-learning projects for middle school students.
The Maine Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of college
and university presidents established to encourage and enhance
campus engagement in the community. The Donald Harward Faculty
Award is presented annually, and honors former Bates College
President and Maine Campus Compact Board Member Donald Harward.
Other 2004 honorees are Susan Fickett of St. Joseph’s
College and Dr. Mark Tappan of Colby College.
The CLASS/PDS (Professional Development School) program prepares
undergraduate students to become elementary and secondary
school teachers. It combines coursework leading to a liberal
arts bachelor’s degree with a professional program of
teacher preparation that results in K-8 certification. Students
take a combination of courses on campus along with seminars
and field-related activities at local partner schools such
as Sherwood Heights Elementary School and the Auburn Middle
School. Please call 753-6618 for more information.
