UNIVERSITY SYSTEM STRATEGIC PLAN FORUM
IN LEWISTON
June 2004
Thursday, June 10, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.USM's Lewiston-Auburn College
A public forum will be held at Lewiston-Auburn College on
Thursday, June 10, to give interested individuals an opportunity
to express their opinions and ideas regarding the University
of Maine System's Draft Strategic Plan. The forum will be
held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the large conference room (Room
170) at Lewiston-Auburn College, which is located at 51 Westminster
Street in Lewiston.
University System trustees and administrators began their
strategic planning initiative in 2003 and issued a Draft Strategic
Plan in March 2004. The purpose of the plan is to maintain
and increase quality by eliminating unnecessary duplication
of academic programs, reducing administrative costs, and making
more effective use of new technologies.
The three-month-long public comment period concludes at the
end of June, and University System trustees and senior administrators
will use the information gathered to prepare a revised plan,
which will be issued in September. Once approved, a second
phase of planning will begin to define the actual implementation
steps necessary. Implementation of the plan won't begin until
after UMS Chancellor Joseph W. Westphal submits the plan to
the Legislature in early 2005.
Established in 1968, the University of Maine System is the
state's largest educational institution, with more than 34,000
students enrolled. It features seven universities - some with
multiple campuses - located across the state, as well as 11
University College outreach centers and more than 100 interactive
distance education sites.
