Corporate Spellers Raise Funds for Future

Spelling Champs – Again! Spellers
from Maine Proofreading, Inc. successfully defended their
title at the Second Annual Corporate Spelling Bee held recently
at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College. Pictured here from

Local business
people, lawyers, educators, and service-providers donned
their thinking caps as they participated in the Second
Annual Corporate Spelling Bee held recently at USM’s
Lewiston-Auburn College. The event was sponsored by
the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce.
A total of 12 three-member teams put their spelling acumen
on the line for this fund-raising event. The spellers from
Maine Proofreading, Inc. emerged victorious in the championship
round over the runner-up team of L-A College staff members.
The other entries were the Auburn and Lewiston School Departments,
Banknorth, Brann and Isaacson, City of Auburn, Morin Brick,
Sun Journal, the Dunlap Corporation, CLASS students, and the
AMs. Pellers.” Other event sponsors included The Employment
Times, FX Marcotte Furniture, and Fireside Inn & Suites
Dick Gleason, owner
of the Gleason Radio Group, served as the Bee Master,
assisted by Chamber President Chip Morrison. The judges
were L-A College Dean Betty Robinson and Chamber staffer
Beth Eckhardt.
The proceeds from this event will benefit the
endowment fund for the CLASS Teacher Education Program at
L-A College. CLASS is a field-based professional development
program which includes course work in an academic major leading
to a bachelor's degree in a liberal arts field and teacher
preparation that results in certification to teach in the
elementary and middle schools.
